About Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is a beautiful freshwater Rift Valley lake located approximately 90 kilometers northwest of Nairobi, at 1,884 meters above sea level. This serene lake is surrounded by lush vegetation, flower farms, and dramatic volcanic hills, creating a picturesque setting ideal for relaxation and adventure. Unlike many other Rift Valley lakes, Naivasha's fresh waters support a thriving ecosystem—hippopotamuses wallow in the shallows, giraffes and zebras graze along the shore, and over 400 bird species flock to its shores. The lake's key attraction is Crescent Island, a private conservancy accessible by boat where you can walk among wildlife (giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and even lions) in a safe, predator-controlled environment—it's the only Kenyan park where walking Safari is permitted. With its mild climate, watersports, boating, fishing, and proximity to Hell's Gate National Park (perfect for cycling and hiking), Lake Naivasha offers diverse activities for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and adventure seekers alike.

Best Time to Visit Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha's high altitude (1,884m) gives it a mild, temperate climate year-round with temperatures rarely exceeding 25°C (77°F) or dropping below 10°C (50°F). The lake is accessible all year, but seasons affect wildlife viewing and certain activities.

Dry Seasons (January-March & June-September): These are the best months for wildlife viewing and outdoor activities. The weather is sunny and dry, making game drives, cycling through Hell's Gate, and hiking Mount Longonot most pleasant. Vegetation is less dense, improving wildlife sightings. These months coincide with school holidays, so book early for peak periods (July-August, December).

Green Seasons (April-May & October-December): The rainy seasons bring lush, green landscapes and fewer tourists. April and May see heavier rains (long rains), while October-December experiences lighter short rains. Bird watching is exceptional during these months as migratory species join resident birds. Some roads may be muddy, but the scenery is spectacular. Lodge rates are lower.

Crescent Island & Boat Rides: These are possible year-round. Boat trips to Crescent Island operate daily; the 15-minute crossing is safe regardless of season. For the best photography, aim for morning boat trips when light is soft and animals are active.

  • Year-round destination with pleasant climate
  • Best for game viewing & hiking: Jun-Sep & Jan-Mar
  • Bird watching peak: Oct-Apr (migrants present)
  • Fewer crowds & great deals: Apr-May & Nov

How to Reach Lake Naivasha

By Road

From Nairobi, a 90km drive (1.5-2 hours) along the sealed A104 highway to Naivasha town, then 10km to the lakeshore. Scenic Rift Valley route passing through Great Rift Valley viewpoint.

Our Guided Transfers

Recommended! Private, comfortable vehicles with expert guides who know the best spots. Door-to-door from your Nairobi accommodation. Includes stops at viewpoints and optional Hell's Gate.

Public Transport

Buses and matatus run frequently from Nairobi to Naivasha (2 hours). From Naivasha town, take a taxi to lakeside lodges (15 mins). Less convenient but affordable for independent travelers.

Airstrip Access

Naivasha has a small airstrip receiving charter flights from Nairobi Wilson (30 mins). Ideal for avoiding road travel and maximizing time at the lake. We can arrange transfers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Crescent Island and why is it special?

Crescent Island is a private conservancy on a peninsula jutting into Lake Naivasha. It's famous for being the only Kenyan wildlife area where you can safely walk among free-roaming animals without fences or vehicles separating you. The island hosts giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, impalas, dik-diks, and occasionally lions (who are kept in a separate, fenced section). Walking allows intimate experiences—you can photograph giraffes at eye level and watch animals undisturbed. The island was a filming location for "Out of Africa" and offers breathtaking views across the lake. Access is by a short boat ride from the mainland.

Is Lake Naivasha safe for swimming?

We don't recommend swimming in Lake Naivasha due to the presence of hippos in many areas and a bilharzia (schistosomiasis) parasite risk from freshwater snails. However, many lakeside lodges and resorts have swimming pools with safe water for swimming. Boat rides, fishing, and shoreline walks are perfectly safe—just follow guide instructions and never enter the lake water.

Can I visit Hell's Gate from Naivasha?

Absolutely. Hell's Gate National Park is just a 20-minute drive from Lake Naivasha. It's one of Kenya's few parks where you can walk, cycle, or drive through without a guide (though we recommend one). Key attractions include the Olkaria Geothermal Station, Fischer's Tower, scenic gorges, and abundant wildlife. Bring cycling shoes, sun protection, and water. Entry fees are separate from Naivasha.

How many days should I stay at Lake Naivasha?

A 2-day, 1-night stay is perfect for a weekend getaway from Nairobi, allowing for a boat trip to Crescent Island, lunch, and exploring Hell's Gate or Mount Longonot on day two. For a more relaxed pace combining all three attractions, plan for 3 days, 2 nights. The lake also makes an excellent stopover between Masai Mara/Lake Nakuru and Nairobi (2 nights suffice).

What wildlife can I see around Lake Naivasha?

Lake Naivasha offers diverse wildlife: hippos (abundant along the shore, best seen at dawn/dusk), giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, waterbucks, various monkeys and baboons, and over 400 bird species including African fish eagles, kingfishers, pelicans, and flamingos (seasonal). Crescent Island specifically allows walking among giraffes, zebras, and gazelles. Hell's Gate adds Additional wildlife like buffalo, baboon, and various antelope. Leopards are present but rarely seen.
