Malindi and Watamu share the same tropical coastal climate as the rest of Kenya's coastline, with the advantage of being slightly drier than some southern coast areas. The region remains a wonderful destination year-round, but optimal conditions vary depending on your interests.
Peak Season (December - March & July - October): These dry months offer the best weather—sunny skies, warm temperatures (28-32°C), and calm seas ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The period from January to March is particularly excellent for underwater visibility. July-October may see occasional afternoon breezes, perfect for kite surfing.
Marine Life Highlights: The Watamu Marine Park is a protected area with vibrant coral reefs year-round. For sea turtle nesting, visit between March and May (green turtles) or August-October (hawksbill turtles). Dolphin sightings are common throughout the year.
Rainy Seasons: The long rains (April-June) and short rains (November) bring occasional heavy showers but rarely all-day rain. The landscape turns lush and green, and hotels offer significant discounts. This is a great time for budget travelers and birdwatchers, as many migratory species arrive.
Tropical paradise meets Swahili history
Malindi Airport (MYD) receives daily scheduled flights from Nairobi (1 hour) and charter flights. From the airport, it's a 15-20 minute transfer to hotels. Watamu is 30 minutes south by road.
The 110km drive from Mombasa to Malindi takes about 2 hours along the coastal highway. From Malindi, Watamu is another 25km south (~30 minutes). The scenic route passes through beautiful coastal landscapes.
Matatus (shared minivans) and buses run regularly between Mombasa, Malindi, and Watamu. While economical, they make multiple stops. We recommend private transfers or organized tours for comfort and flexibility.
For the adventurous, private boat charters from Mombasa or Diani can reach Watamu's beaches, offering spectacular coastal views. This is a premium option best arranged through tour operators.
Malindi is about 110km (2 hours by car) north of Mombasa. From Nairobi, it's approximately 480km (6-7 hours by road) or a 1-hour flight to Malindi Airport. Watamu is located roughly halfway between Mombasa and Malindi (about 20km south of Malindi).
Gedi Ruins is a 13th-century Swahili town hidden in a coastal forest near Watamu. This UNESCO World Heritage site features well-preserved mosques, houses, and tombs, offering a fascinating glimpse into medieval Swahili civilization. The ruins are beautifully overgrown with giant baobab trees and home to playful monkeys. It's absolutely worth visiting—allow 2-3 hours for the guided tour.
Yes! Watamu Marine Park is excellent for beginners. The waters are generally calm with good visibility. There are numerous shallow coral gardens perfect for first-time snorkelers, and many operators offer guided snorkeling trips with equipment and instruction. Dive centers provide PADI courses for beginners wanting to scuba dive.
Absolutely! Many visitors combine the coast with a safari in Tsavo East National Park, which is en route between Mombasa and Malindi. We can arrange a 2-3 day Tsavo East safari either before or after your beach stay. Alternatively, fly from Malindi to Nairobi and connect to Masai Mara or other parks.
Both are family-friendly but with different vibes. Malindi offers more activities (town tours, historical sites, more restaurants) and is better for families seeking a mix of culture and beach. Watamu is quieter, more relaxed, and perfect for families wanting a peaceful beach holiday with excellent snorkeling right offshore. Many family-friendly resorts are in Galu Beach area near Watamu.
